It happens to everyone. You set your phone down, take a corner, and it slides into the narrow gap between the seat and the center console. Getting it back means pulling over, moving the seat and fishing around with your fingertips. Here's how to stop it happening, and what to do when it already has.
Why things fall into the seat gap
Most cars leave a small gap between the front seats and the center console so the seats can slide and recline. It's just wide enough for a phone, keys, coins or a pen to slip through, and just narrow enough that you can't easily reach in after them.
1. Fill the gap
The simplest fix is a seat gap filler: an insert that sits in the space between the seat and the console. Our PU leather car seat gap filler organizer blocks the gap and adds a storage pocket on top, so the things you used to lose now have somewhere to go. It comes for the driver side, the passenger side, or as a set for both front seats.
2. Give your phone a proper home
Phones end up in the gap because they're sitting loose on the seat or console. A phone mount keeps your phone off the seat entirely, and at eye level for navigation. Choose a dashboard clip mount or a suction cup windshield and dashboard mount, depending on your car's layout.
3. Keep small items contained
Keys, cards and receipts are the next most common casualties. A sun visor organizer keeps cards and sunglasses up and out of the way, and a seat back organizer gives passengers their own pockets so their things stay off the seats.
4. Build a couple of easy habits
- Put your phone in its mount before you start the car.
- Keep keys in a pocket or a dedicated spot, not on the seat.
- Clear loose items off the console whenever you stop for fuel.
Already dropped something?
Only go after it once the car is parked. Slide the seat all the way forward or back to widen the gap, and use a flashlight to look underneath. Never reach between the seats while you're driving.
The quick fix
Want both fixes at once? The Driver's Essentials Set pairs a dashboard phone holder with a seat gap filler, for less than buying them separately. You'll find more ideas in our car organizers.
