Dogs make great road-trip companions, right up until the back seat is covered in fur, muddy paw prints and water bowl spills. With a little preparation you can bring your dog along and still arrive with a car you're happy to sit in. Here's how to keep your car clean and organized when traveling with a dog.
1. Protect the back seat
A hammock-style seat cover is the single biggest help. Our dog car seat cover buckles around the front and rear headrests, covering the seat and the backs of the front seats. It's made from waterproof-coated Oxford cloth, so fur and mud shake or wipe off, and a mesh window lets your dog see you and lets air through.
If your dog rides in the back of an SUV or hatchback instead, a waterproof dog cargo liner covers the trunk floor so fur and mud stay off the carpet. Check the size on the product page against your cargo area before ordering.
2. Keep your dog secure
A loose dog can be a distraction for the driver. Use a restraint designed for car travel, such as a travel harness attached to the seat belt or a secured crate, and follow your vet's advice for your dog's size. A seat cover protects your car; it isn't a restraint.
3. Give the dog gear its own home
Leashes, poop bags, treats and a collapsible bowl tend to end up scattered everywhere. Headrest hooks give the leash and a bag of supplies a place to hang. A seat back organizer holds water bottles, treats and wipes within reach of the front seats.
4. Plan for water and messes
- Bring fresh water and offer it at every stop.
- Pack old towels for wet or muddy paws before your dog gets back in.
- Keep a hanging car trash can for used wipes and bags until you reach a bin.
5. Stop regularly
Dogs need breaks too. Stop every couple of hours for a walk, water and a bathroom break, which is good for the driver as well.
6. Never leave your dog in a parked car
A parked car can heat up quickly, even on a mild day with the windows cracked. If you need to stop somewhere your dog can't come in, take turns or plan dog-friendly stops. On hot days, a windshield sun shade helps keep the car cooler for when you get back, but it doesn't make it safe to leave a pet inside.
