Car Accessories for Rideshare Drivers: 9 Practical Ideas

If you drive for a rideshare or delivery app, your car is your workplace. Passengers notice a tidy, comfortable back seat, and you notice every hour in the driver's seat. You don't need expensive upgrades to improve both. Here are practical car accessories for rideshare drivers that keep your phone in view, your passengers comfortable and your car clean between trips.

1. Mount your phone where you can see it

Navigation and trip requests come through your phone, so it needs a fixed, hands-free spot at eye level. You have three main choices. An air vent phone holder hooks behind a vent slat and closes around your phone one-handed. A dashboard clip holder grips the edge of the dashboard, and its head rotates 360°. A suction cup mount sticks to the windshield or a smooth dashboard. Not sure which suits your car? Read Car Phone Mount Types: Vent vs Dashboard vs Windshield. Some states limit where devices can be mounted on a windshield, so check your local rules.

2. Give passengers a place for tissues and water

A small thing riders appreciate is not having to ask for a tissue. A car seat storage net stretches between the backs of the two front seats and hooks onto the headrest posts. Its mesh pocket expands to hold a tissue box and bottles where back-seat passengers can reach them.

3. Keep the back of the seats organized

A seat back organizer with tray hangs on the back of a front seat and adds pockets plus a built-in tissue box. Its PU leather wipes clean, which helps when you have many passengers a day. If you'd like to keep bottled water cool on long shifts, the insulated seat back organizer has a foil-lined compartment and side pockets for bottles.

4. Make trash easy to throw away

Passengers leave wrappers, receipts and cups behind. A hanging car trash can straps to a headrest, seat back or console. It has a waterproof lining and a soft lid, so trash goes in easily and stays out of sight. Empty it at the end of every shift.

5. Stop losing your own things beside the seat

Between trips you are picking up your phone, keys and sunglasses all the time, and the gap beside the seat swallows them. A seat gap filler organizer fills the gap between the seat and the center console and turns it into a pocket. A sun visor organizer keeps sunglasses, cards and receipts above your head instead of in the door pocket. A cup holder expander turns one cup holder into two, so your own drink has a spot.

6. Keep the trunk clear for luggage

Airport and station trips need an empty trunk. Keep your own gear in one foldable trunk organizer box with a lid, and fold it flat when a passenger needs the whole space. Headrest hooks also give shopping bags or an umbrella a place to hang off the floor. More ideas in How to Organize Your Car Trunk.

7. Look after yourself on long shifts

Hours in the driver's seat add up. A memory foam seat cushion adds a softer, contoured layer with a non-slip base and a washable cover. A center console armrest cushion pads a hard console lid and has a side pocket, and a headrest pillow fills the gap behind your neck. The Long Drive Comfort Set includes all three for less than buying them separately. See How to Make Long Drives More Comfortable for more ideas.

8. Take proper breaks

When you stop for lunch or paperwork between trips, a steering wheel tray hooks over the wheel and gives you a flat surface for a meal or a laptop. Use it only while the car is parked, and take it off before you drive. Getting out to stretch and rest your eyes is a good idea too.

9. Clean between shifts

A quick routine keeps the car ready for the next passenger: empty the trash can, wipe the seat back organizers, shake out the mats and check the back seat for items left behind. For the outside, a car wash mop with a telescoping handle reaches the roof and comes with a spare head, and in winter an extendable snow brush and ice scraper clears the windows before your first trip. A few safety notes

  • Set up your route and accept trips only in the way your app and local law allow. Don't hold or type on your phone while driving.
  • Keep mounts, organizers and hooks clear of airbags, and never place anything where it blocks your view.
  • Make sure nothing in the footwell can slide under the pedals.
  • Check the back seat after every trip so passengers' belongings, and your own, aren't left loose in the car.

Start with the basics
